EDIT by ausador: Please note that I did not actually start this thread, I am merely acting as the caretaker for it in the absence of the original creator of the topic,Archas.
Hello there! I'm sure you all have noticed that hundreds of new threads are made here in Discussion every day. A good deal are interesting discussion topics, but the vast majority of them are basic questions, cries for help, and things like that. I enjoy reading a good discussion, but it becomes more difficult to find those threads if they're constantly buried under "HOW DO I MINE OBSIDIAN" and other small queries.
This thread aims to fix that, by working together as a community and helping each other out. Here, you are free to ask any question that may be on your mind about Minecraft, and anyone who knows the answer to your problem can simply post here in response. This means that you don't need to make a thread about any old question that pops into your head; with this, the community can consolidate every question we might conceive of into one handy thread that can act as an encyclopedia of sorts. I will update the opening post with various questions that have been answered, so if you think your question is one that might have already been discussed in the thread, you can simply check this first post to find out.
However, first we must set some basic guidelines for how to conduct ourselves in this thread:
Remember, this is a thread for simple questions and answers. Complicated discussion points usually deserve their own threads, and don't really need to be asked here. Additionally, very open-ended questions that do not necessarily have an exact solution should be given their own threads as well.
Given that this thread is situated in General Discussion, please limit yourselves to only asking questions that fit in this section. Questions about administrating a server, installing a mod or texture pack, or similar queries are often situational. Because of that, they belong in their own forum sections (or in their specific thread, if asking about a mod or texture pack).
Anyone who spams, advertises or posts off-topic content in this thread will have their post deleted and be appropriately warned. Please refrain from such.
Example images that DO fit in this thread:
What sort of blocks can Endermen pick up?
Can Creeper explosions break through a 3-block wall of End Stone?
I don't have a question right now, but it's a great topic, I always wanted something like that. I don't like always starting a new topic just to ask a question with an answer Yes/No or something like that. This is great, I will certainly be using this. =) Oh, hang on, I do have a question! "What sort of blocks can Endermen pick up?" ;D

Thank you for the support.
As for your question: Endermen can pick up grass, dirt, Mycelium, sand, gravel, clay, flowers, mushrooms, Cacti, pumpkins, melons and TNT.
Thanks to Aeres for, hopefully, a very useful common questions thread, with the aim of helping to combat the large amount of redundant threads we receive in the Discussion section.
In addition: Those looking to ask a question or seeking out a particular answer should always browse the questions and answers in this thread before posting a question as a reply.
Advertising, surveys, spam, server recruitment, and anything that isn't a simple question or answer can and will be ignored. Please do not post that sort of thing here
To clarify this, anyone who spams, advertises or posts off-topic content will have their post deleted and be appropriately warned.
The short answer: Villagers don't spawn randomly like other mobs do. New villagers only appear either when the village is first created (on initial world generation or through traveling to previously unexplored areas of your world), or through "romance." To have them "romance," you need two villagers and several "houses" (wooden doors, with certain rules dictating nearby block placement.) If the population cap (0.35 times the number of houses) hasn't been reached, the village's inhabitants will occasionally go into "love mode" and spawn a baby villager.

I'm not sure what winrar or 7zip have to do with it at all. Those are programs for creating and reading archive files on a computer. I'm guessing you found a mod to spawn your villagers with and don't know what to do with it? So how about this for an entry:
Q: I've downloaded a mod, but it's just a .zip file and I don't know what to do with it. Help?
A: Use a program like WinRar or 7Zip to open up your minecraft.jar file and the mod's .zip, .rar, or .jar file. Copy all the files from the mod into minecraft.jar, and then delete the META-INF folder, if it exists.
( ^^ actually, someone should double-check that one before adding it to the first post. I think it's right from what I've read, but I don't actually "install" my mods, I use Magic Launcher to do it all for me )
Village Mechanics: A not-so-brief guide - Update for 1.4! Added subsection on iron farming to the iron golems section. Only ten villagers required to spawn golems (down from sixteen)! Put to rest the "facing doors cancel each other" myth!

That's basically how one installs a mod, yes. However, since mods very often require situational methods when installing (like moving around resource files and paulscode stuff), and due to the existence of multiple sub-fora dedicated to mods and their creation, I feel like that sort of question is best left to those sections. I intended this thread to be geared more towards vanilla gameplay, and not toward tech support/mod installation/client issues.
I've added the villager question, though. I wasn't quite sure what Goldbar7 was asking (I thought he was trying to find a way to use spawn eggs to create baby villagers!), so I appreciate your intervention there.
This might not belong here.... but I still want to ask it. I'm getting this error ever since the 1.3.0 update. This error is listed on the home screen.

Whenever I attempt to login all I get is "Failed to connect to minecraft.net"

Please direct all support questions to the Support section. This thread exists to answer simple common questions regarding Minecraft game content, nothing more.
1) What blocks can Villagers operate? I know they can open and close doors, but can they open trapdoors? Or climb up ladders? 2) I've never seen a thunderstorm in Minecraft and I'd love to see one. Are there any specific biomes they occur in more often? Or are there differences between storms in different biomes?

The only mechanism they can operate is a wooden door. They can't push buttons, flip levers, or open fence gates or trapdoors. Like any mob, the will activate a pressure plate if they step on it, and I haven't played much 1.3.1 yet so I don't know if mobs can activate tripwires but I assume if any can, all of them can. Ladders aren't really a "mechanism" so to speak, but if they're inside a ladder block and pressing up against the wall, any mob will move up a ladder I believe. Again, they won't "use" a ladder per se, I don't think they account for it in their pathfinding, but if they happen to be moving the right way in the right place, they'll go up.
